NGK expands possibilities of ceramic technology
NGK Insulators Ltd
located in Nagoya city, the largest in Chubu religion manufactures products for
electric power related business, ceramics products business, electronics
business and process technology business with ceramic technology as its core
expertise.
The company's insulators which are essential for large-capacity transmission and stable supply of power are highly valued worldwide for their technological capabilities and excellent quality.
It has developed a sodium-sulfur battery using fine ceramics to enable high-efficiency and large-capacity power storage.
Its high technology also brought honeycomb ceramics obtained by firing the ceramics in a grid and are used around the world as devices for purifying automobile exhaust gas.
The latest business results have been sluggish. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, net income decreased by about 22% from the previous year to only 35.5 billion yen.
Operating income decreased 8% from previous year to 64.7 billion yen due to a decline in profits from electronics business and expanding deficit in the power-related business.
Extraordinary losses from a fixed asset impairment loss of 10.9 billion yen in the package business and the insulators business influenced those results.
In addition a loss of 3 billion yen was recorded due to the dissolution of a Chinese subsidiary which manufactures insulators.
Although power-related businesses such as insulators are expected to have poor business performance for the time being as investments by domestic and overseas power companies will continue to be curtailed, profits in the ceramics business are expected to increase thanks to growing demand for products for passenger cars and trucks due to the tightening exhaust gas regulations.
In recent business development, in September 2018 it announced that it would build a powder production facility to mix raw materials used for its automobile exhaust gas purification products at Ishikawa plant located in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture.
By this investment the company will establish a raw material supply system that can meet expanding demand mainly in Asia.
This facility built in the Ishikawa Plant will have high-productivity powder production capacities with automated and labor-saving functions enabling the company to fulfill their business from storing raw materials to mixture of powder, production and shipments of finished products at this plant.
The investment amount is said to be about 7 billion yen.
